Message from the artists:
Corrie (she/her) is an artist and educator in conversation with social practice, fibre art and installation, among other mediums. Her artwork is building relationships that teach her how to listen to and learn from those often silenced through current systems of power. In this she holds so much gratitude for all those who have, and continue to, teach her about empathy, activism, change and care.
Her most important relationship over the last 10 years is with her kiddo Millie (she/her). This relationship has taught her so much -including how to love and live with parts of herself that had been hard to hold love for at times.
Millie is a friend, gymnast, student, grandchild and artist who loves words, stories, fashion and her dog Fester.
This project started with Corrie thinking about the relationship between water and her fat body. In fall of 2023 Millie and Corrie were able to attend a residency organized by Mothra on Toronto Island. There, Corrie felted a small sculpture of herself. Millie made outfits and furniture for this felt person. She invited her residency friends, Samara and Ada, to design the things felted Corrie needed for enjoyment on the island. They cared for Corrie.
Millie also loves the water - spending hours under the surface, just coming up for quick breathes of air. In the fabric quilts Corrie is working from moments of Millie finding joy with just herself and the water.
