Variegated Sweets: Rachel Vanderzwet

Sun. March 28th 2021 - Sun. April 18th 2021
Vanderzwet approaches her practice with curiosity and a desire to explore the complexity and allure of contemporary visual culture. Unabashed in her approach to imagery, which is often fraught with what she terms “bubble gum” qualities, her work is bright and cheeky, loud and alluring, energetic and humorous, quirky but familiar.
This trio of small gouache paintings explores the possibilities of joy and exploration through technology and pop culture. Each piece is made with the same set of templates which have been digitally designed and machine cut by the artist. Through colour and manipulation of the painted surface each piece tackles the negotiation between abstraction and realism from a different approach.
Rachel Vanderzwet moved to Victoria from Ontario in 2014. She and has an MFA in Visual Arts from the University of Victoria as well as a BFA from University of Guelph and a Diploma in Graphic Design and Art Fundamentals from Niagara College.
